The situation
My father, Preet Saini, opened Mrs Kaur’s in 2006 in a tiny Khan Market shop, as a tribute to his mother, Pritam Kaur. It began with cookies and brownies and grew into a bakery and café that many families have made part of birthdays, festivals and everyday treats.
The brief
A flagship for a brand with that much memory attached has two jobs. It has to feel like Mrs Kaur’s to people who grew up with it, and it has to work as a bakery and a café through the whole day, from the bakery counter to the café table.
The work
I designed the flagship myself. It is organised as a sequence of spaces: the bakery counter at the front, then a main dining room, a café room, booth seating and a private dining room, so a quick bakery visit, a long lunch and a family gathering can share one address.
Living with it
I direct the brand’s food and beverage development, so the flagship is where the menu, the service and the room are tested every day. In 2026, its twentieth year, Mrs Kaur’s won Best Western Casual Dining at the Times Food & Nightlife Awards Gurugram, an award to the brand and its team.
